The most relevant indicator for evaluating road safety is road fatal accidents, instead of road fatalities, especially for the small countries. It is misleading to analyze data based on absolute numbers. As described in this paper the countries were compared based on the number of road fatalities, which is relevant and publicly available, as the number of fatal road accidents is not available for most countries. However, the number of fatal accidents is important for analyzing road safety as it follows the Poisson distribution.
The countries' annual road fatalities were analyzed and visualized. The smaller countries, with population up to 5 million, the fatality rate scores were higher and the patterns were more concentrated compared to the data of bigger countries. Therefore, for evaluating road safety, the classification of countries is recommended: countries up to 5 million of population, medium size countries 5-10 millions, large countries - over 10 million. However, the boundaries for this grouping could be also a subject for further research. The results of this study are highly valuable for further analysis of road safety and for estimating the safety situation on roads.
The limitation of the study is, that, for the number of "fatal accidents", the estimations were sometimes used. Therefore, further research could be done in improving the quality of the actual data.
